Here’s What Charlotte Protesters Want You To Know About Racism

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― Protesters have flooded the streets of North Carolina’s largest city since 43-year-old Keith Scott was shot and killed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Tuesday.

Many of those demonstrating are frustrated and tired of carrying the weight that comes with being black in America.

The Huffington Post asked them to share what they want everyone to know about race in America ― unfiltered and uncensored.

Here’s what they said.

“We will not be able to fight oppression, we will not be able to live in a system that was created for white men by white men … we need to completely abolish incarceration, abolish the police department ― and that’s when we’ll be able to get a chance.”

Catherine Farmer, 18

“It begins with us, it begins with the people. Until we begin to educate ourselves and educate our children on what racism truly is and what systemic racism is and what injustice is, nothing will ever change. Right now, we’re still caught up in a world where the old guard still runs things. And it’s very important for us as a whole ― black, white, Latino, Hispanic ― to come together to make these kind of changes. It’s destroying our country right now. It’s creating a division.”

“It’s not healthy for us at all. Right now, our people is being targeted. When I say ‘our people,’ I mean minorities. We’re being targeted by blue.”

Maurice Fair, 36

“It’s real, it’s a thing ― and just because others haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean it’s not real. We live it every day, so it needs to stop. No lives will matter until black lives matter, too.”

Cindy Robinson, 32

“[We need] more awareness in the justice system. A lot of people don’t understand the justice system or their rights.”

―Mario The Mic Man

“This isn’t anything unique, this isn’t a new situation that we’re in ― you know what I’m saying. Ever since America was established in the 1700s, we’ve been in this place. If people really wanna get out, we’re going to have to start exercising tactics that haven’t been exercised before.

A lot of the things that we’re doing right now are things that we’ve done … in the past. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of someone who’s insane.

We can’t be insane. We’re gonna have to try to do something different. We gotta realize that this isn’t a new problem. This is not something that’s extraordinary ― this is actually very ordinary. We’re gonna have to really put our brains together and utilize all tactics to get liberation.”

Dhoruba Shakur, 26

“The biggest problem in this nation is hypocrisy. America doesn’t seem to understand that she has become to black people what Britain was to her. When the constituents of the king were hung by [the] founding fathers, it was considered to be patriotism.

But, before that, they were considered to be terrorists. When you sit here and say that we can’t burn down buildings ― that wasn’t the case when you were doing destruction of property. And those who participated in it was held as martyrs during the Boston Tea Party.

It’s hypocrisy ― left and right, all across the board. We need to do what they’ve done. We need our 1776. They didn’t beg Britain to leave them alone. They didn’t beg for Britain to stop giving them taxation without representation. They did what they needed to do.”

The 11 Struggles Of Hypersensitive Individuals

Here’s the cycle.

Person A does something person B doesn’t like.

Person B gets hurt and calls them out on it.

Person A gets mad at Person B.

It happens to me over and over and over again. It’s gotten to the point where I just expect it, like the people sitting in the splash zone at Sea World.

And then as I sat down to think about it, there’s a lot of struggles that us overly sensitive people go through. It’s not just one thing–it’s a multitude of them. So, in the name of self-therapy through writing, I’m going to list every single one of them.

1. We’re Always The Bad Guy, Even Though We Shouldn’t Be

I’m going to write that again. We’re always the bad guy, even though we shouldn’t be. When somebody hurts us, we tell them about it. Then after we tell them, they feel like we’re the ones attacking THEM, when we’re simply telling them what hurt us. People, it’s really not that hard to avoid being a complete Cotton-Headed Ninnymuggins to somebody. Shout out to Will Ferrel.

2. We Expect People To Be Somewhat Honorable

Many times when conflict arises and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I’m not wrong, I decide to just let things sit until an apology presents itself from the other party. Yeah, about 95 percent of the time that doesn’t happen. Our problem is we expect people to have at least a single shred of dignity and simply say two words that would make things better. Guys, being sensitive goes both ways. We get hurt, but all we need is a freaking apology and we’re better. We don’t need gifts and dinners and vases full of flowers.

And I also want to say that the ball isn’t always in our court. We need to express to the other party that something is wrong. That’s our duty to others.

3. Things End Up Blown Way Out Of Proportion

Because of our sensitivity, and because of the other party’s hard-headedness, things get blown way out of proportion. Things escalate because two simple words couldn’t be said. One person couldn’t humble themselves and say a simple apology.

4. We Can’t Fix It

In case anyone was wondering, we can’t fix this. For the most part, we’re very thoughtful individuals who expect much of ourselves and not much from others. But when somebody pushes our buttons, and we have a few, something must happen. It’s nothing that we can fix. We can try to improve at communicating that we’re hurt instead of internalizing it, but that’s it. We are who we are.

5. People Get Fed Up With Us Easily

It gets to the point with certain people where it’s like the boy who cried wolf syndrome. They get really annoyed that things keep going wrong, even when they should know by now what makes us tick. At one point you have to start wondering whether a relationship between the two of you is even healthy. Not all people are meant to get into a relationship with or be friends with somebody who is sensitive.

6. We’re Left Hurting Extremely Badly

When we do call people out on something, often times they just don’t apologize. Sometimes they even try to make it worse. This is the hardest part of it all because somebody we like or love is deliberately trying to hurt us more. Nothing is worse to a sensitive person than deliberate insensitivity.

7. Most Times We End Up Saying Sorry

Trust me, we hate conflict. We hate conflict as much as we hate getting our feelings hurt. So to bypass conflict we end up saying sorry simply to make things normal again. This isn’t a healthy way to take care of the situation at all.

8. Some Times We’re Serious And Cut People Off

Sometimes we are serious and end up cutting people off for good. And no, it wasn’t all just because of a dumb little text or a dumb little side comment–it was because the other person didn’t have the humility to simply take two seconds to say sorry. Literally all we want is an apology. When we’re hurt that bad, we remember it.

9. People Simply Don’t Learn

After a few months of knowing someone, you kind of understand what makes them tick and what doesn’t make them tick. For those who are friends with sensitive people, you should be able to understand that we have a few land mines embedded in the soil of our personality, but if you simply avoid doing just one or two things, life with us is going to be absolute gravy.

10. We Sound Over-Emotional

I’m sure you got that just from reading this post. The truth is that we’re amazing friends to have. We’ll put in more effort than anyone else and we’ll also be much more thoughtful than anyone else. It goes both ways. You get the insane highs with the lows. And the fact is that you won’t even get the lows that much if you simply stop doing the two or three things that we don’t like!

11. It’s Hard To Find Someone That Gets It

I have a few friends that get it. They understand that sometimes jokes need to be kept to a minimum, and that I have my stressful days every now and then. I hardly fight with these kinds of people. For the most part we have awesome times together with little to no conflict at all, while on the other hand I could have multiple conflicts a day with somebody else.

Again, it all depends on the personality of the people around us, and whether they even care about the sensitivity of other people.

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

Trump Flies With Gold-Plated Bathroom Fixtures, And You’re Paying Millions For It

WASHINGTON – Taxpayers are now picking up most of Donald Trump’s air travel costs, unnecessarily spending millions of dollars because he insists on flying aboard his luxury 757 instead of a practical plane.

And because the GOP presidential nominee owns both the company that owns the jetliner and the one that operates it, some percentage of that taxpayer money is likely winding up as profit in Trump’s personal bank account.

The bombastic businessman has often bragged about the comforts of his ride, with its full bedroom, shower and 24-karat gold-plated bathroom fixtures. But because it seats so few passengers, Trump’s Secret Service agents appear to make up more than half of the plane’s flight manifests. And that means taxpayers are now legally required to pick up the majority of its staggering running costs.

Over the first three months of this year, after Trump asked for and received Secret Service protection, the agency’s payments to his campaign accounted for 48 percent of the $ 1.7 million that it paid Tag Air Inc., the candidate’s company that operates the aging jet.

Over June, July and August, as Trump became the GOP nominee and his security detail grew, the agency’s payments to the campaign made up 78 percent of the $ 1.3 million that it paid to Tag Air, according to The Huffington Post’s review of Federal Election Commission filings.

Politico, which first reported these payments, put the total the Secret Service paid to the Trump campaign at $ 1.6 million. But a closer look at campaign finance filings shows that the U.S. Secret Service covered more than $ 2.3 million of the $ 3.8 million Trump’s campaign has paid Tag Air in 2016.

That figure is on pace to top $ 3 million by Election Day on Nov. 8 – a total that would be nearly double what taxpayers spent to fly Secret Service agents around with 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

The difference: Romney did what every other non-incumbent presidential candidate has done in recent history and chartered an airliner on which staff, Secret Service and the traveling press corps all flew together, thereby driving down the cost for everyone.

“It’s eye-opening, I guess,” said Bob Biersack, who spent three decades at the FEC before joining the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. “Part of the Trump phenomenon.”

This is a public perception thing. At some point, people will begin to say, ‘Wait a minute: this is ridiculous.’
Bob Biersack, Center for Responsive Politics

Biersack said the payments do not appear to be illegal and that the former reality TV show host was not likely to care about appearances. He pointed to the many tax breaks Trump’s businesses have aggressively sought over the years. “This is not the first time he’s used government assets to his own advantage, right?” he added.

Both the Secret Service and the FEC said election regulations do not allow any leeway for how the agency is to reimburse campaigns for travel. Trump’s campaign did not respond to queries from HuffPost about the matter.

The $ 2.3 million the Secret Service spent to fly with Trump is only slightly less than the $ 2.6 million the agency has paid to the campaign of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton ― even though she has had the agency’s protection for twice as long as her Republican opponent.

Clinton, as the spouse of a former president, has had Secret Service protection since the start of her campaign in April 2015, whereas Trump asked for and received protection late last year. What’s more, some of the agency’s payments to the former secretary of state’s campaign cover travel with former President Bill Clinton when he has been on the campaign trail.

The Democratic candidate chartered a 737 that carries Clinton, her traveling staff, Secret Service detail and the traveling press corps in the past month, which should hold down the agency’s travel costs with her for the final two months of the campaign.

The last Republican candidate did the same thing in the final months of 2012. Romney’s chartered McDonnell-Douglas MD-83 was only seven feet shorter than Trump’s Boeing 757, but was configured essentially like a standard airliner and could carry some 150 passengers, even with a more spacious first-class section for Romney and his top staff.

In contrast, Trump’s 757, which he purchased from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2011, boasts a lounge with a 57-inch television and home theater sound, a master bedroom appointed with silk wall coverings and a guest room with a mohair couch that converts to a bed. It can, however, only seat 43 people and it appears not to carry even that many on the campaign trail, based on the number aboard recent flights.

On a brief flight this month on which Trump invited a small group of reporters aboard, there were only about 20 passengers, not counting the crew. Nearly half appeared to be Secret Service agents.

FEC rules require that Secret Service agents pay a “pro-rata share of the travel” to the campaign. So if agents on any given leg make up three quarters of the passengers, the U.S. Government is required to pay three quarters of the cost to fly Trump’s luxury liner.

What that figure is precisely for a given amount of time is known by the Trump campaign, but cannot be determined through the few public documents on file that describe Tag Air.

However, a 757-200 similar to Trump’s can be chartered for about $ 13,000 per hour. Based on fuel consumption rates for that plane, as much as $ 8,000 of that is burned each hour in the air, more if the trip is a series of short hops. Maintenance, food, landing fees and crew salaries add many hundreds of dollars more per hour.

How much the plane generates in profit for Trump after subtracting these costs might be deduced from his tax returns, but he has refused to release those. Trump said he is under IRS audit and that his lawyers have told him it would be unwise to release the returns until this is finished.

And as pricey as his plane is to fly, he makes his travel even more expensive by insisting on returning to New York City at the end of each day so he can sleep in his own bed in Trump Tower’s penthouse. Flying home, rather than overnighting in the next city on the campaign schedule, typically adds three to four hours of flying time per day, translating to $ 27,000 to $ 36,000 per day in higher flight costs.

Those higher costs, though, are being borne in large measure by taxpayers, particularly since the expansion of Trump’s Secret Service detail upon his officially winning the nomination.

How much the plane generates in profit for Trump after subtracting these costs might be deduced from his tax returns, but Trump has refused to release those.

Trump paid Tag Air $ 2.1 million to fly his plane around to campaign events in 2015. The money came from the checks he was writing to fund his campaign, as well as from the sale of “Make America Great Again” hats and other campaign souvenirs. Not a dime came from taxpayers.

This year has been a completely different story, first with the availability of Secret Service payments to defray his travel costs, and then with a flood of donor money following his signing of a joint fundraising deal with the Republican National Committee in May.

Trump’s use of Republican donors’ money at his own businesses since he signed that deal has been previously documented by news outlets including HuffPost. He sent his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach a check for $ 423,000 the very day the fundraising agreement was signed. In all, some $ 600,000 flowed from the Trump campaign to Trump properties that day.

He also increased the rent that his campaign pays at Trump Tower by a factor of five after signing the RNC deal, from $ 35,458 in April to $ 169,758 by July. That higher rent translates to a per-square-foot cost several times higher than what the Clinton campaign pays for its headquarters in Brooklyn.

This lavish spending, though, came at the expense of donors who willingly gave money to Trump. The Secret Service payments to fly on Trump’s glitzy but inefficient plane hit taxpayers, potentially creating problems for him if public anger translates into a drop in support, the Center for Responsive Politics’ Biersack said.

“The issue is that he’s chosen that particular plane,” Biersack said, adding that FEC commissioners likely never contemplated that a candidate would choose such an extravagant mode of transportation. Nor did anyone guess that taxpayers could wind up on the hook if it did happen, Biersack added. “It was never anticipated that the proportion of campaign travelers would be so heavily tilted toward federal officials.”

“This is a public perception thing,” he continued. “At some point, people will begin to say, ‘Wait a minute: this is ridiculous.’”

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

Thank you.

Sincerely

The White Cascade

The White Cascade

The never-before-told story of one of the worst rail disasters in U.S. history in which two trains full of people, trapped high in the Cascade Mountains, are hit by a devastating avalanche In February 1910, a monstrous blizzard centered on Washington State hit the Northwest, breaking records. The world stopped-but nowhere was the danger more terrifying than near a tiny town called Wellington, perched high in the Cascade Mountains, where a desperate situation evolved minute by minute: two trainloads of cold, hungry passengers and their crews found themselves marooned without escape, their railcars gradually being buried in the rising drifts. For days, an army of the Great Northern Railroad’s most dedicated men-led by the line’s legendarily courageous superintendent, James O’Neill-worked round-the-clock to rescue the trains. But the storm was unrelenting, and to the passenger’s great anxiety, the railcars-their only shelter-were parked precariously on the edge of a steep ravine. As the days passed, food and coal supplies dwindled. Panic and rage set in as snow accumulated deeper and deeper on the cliffs overhanging the trains. Finally, just when escape seemed possible, the unthinkable occurred: the earth shifted and a colossal avalanche tumbled from the high pinnacles, sweeping the trains and their sleeping passengers over the steep slope and down the mountainside. Centered on the astonishing spectacle of our nation’s deadliest avalanche, The White Cascade is the masterfully told story of a supremely dramatic and never-before-documented American tragedy. An adventure saga filled with colorful and engaging history, this is epic narrative storytelling at its finest.

Weekend Roundup: When Better Angels Lose Their Wings

In an enlightened dialogue, the Dalai Lama tells Archbishop Desmond Tutu that his years as a refugee have taught him to identify with the plight of so many others today. “This recognition that we are all connected,” says Tutu, “is the birth of empathy and compassion.” However noble this sentiment, the world can look a lot different to a German burgher trying to provide for his family and preserve the character of his community than it does to two religious leaders conversing in the misty hills of Dharamsala. As much as we may feel global, we react local.

At the Global Progress 2016 conference in Montreal recently, Germany’s vice chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel, concisely captured the backlash roiling politics in his country and the rest of Europe. “As the average citizens see it,” he said, “first the authorities spent billions on bailing out the banks, and now are spending generously on refugees from Syria and elsewhere — meanwhile cutting back on pensions, unemployment payments and other social benefits through austerity policies. ‘What about us?’ they ask.” That attitude may not make saints of citizens, but neither does it make them sinners. As German Chancellor Angela Merkel is discovering through repeated blows at the polls, when the wages of war outstrip the means of empathy, people retreat into their own suffering and better angels lose their wings. Bad faith results from good intentions if the capacity to fulfill moral claims is lacking.

Writing from Germany, Tobias Lill worries that if Merkel does not take action soon to relieve the anxiety of her citizens, the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party could soon arrive in power. “When vast swaths of the country have lost faith in establishment parties,” he says, “it can quickly lead to crisis.” The key to avoiding such a crisis, he argues, is providing better support for working families.

The refugee crisis was front and center this week at the United Nations General Assembly. As Willa Frej reports, U.S. President Barack Obama convened a summit of leaders from more than 50 nations who pledged $ 4.5 billion in aid to groups helping refugees to find education and work. The U.N. Development Programme administrator, Helen Clark, calls for a greater focus on “prevention and mediation” of conflicts before they turn into full fledged wars while “promoting inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods” in the troubled nations from which refugees and migrants flee. Mercy Corps’ Neal Keny-Guyer argues that “conflict causes violent extremism more than violent extremism causes conflict.” Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, outlines the enormous economic costs of conflict in the Mideast and North Africa, stressing the importance of keeping “core government institutions functioning in times of conflict” in order “to maintain life-saving services.” Gordon Brown, the former British prime minister and U.N. special envoy for global education, is concerned that a “lost generation” is in the making as an estimated 265 million displaced children worldwide are out of school.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, whose country has been one of the primary targets of Donald Trump’s xenophobic campaign, argues that agreements reached at the U.N. this week “must aim at strengthening the state’s capabilities for the protection of migrants and their human rights, while recognizing their contributions to economic development and achieving their social inclusion, in order to eradicate intolerance and racism.”

WorldPost Middle East Correspondent Sophia Jones, in Istanbul, and Danae Leivada, in Athens, report on the deplorable conditions at the Moria refugee detention center on the island of Lesbos, which was engulfed in fire this week. The mayor, they report, has not ruled out the possibility that the blaze was ignited by members of the neo-fascist Golden Dawn party, whom Greek journalists have also accused of attacking them at an anti-refugee protest, HuffPost Greece’s Marialena Perpiraki reports.

Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, writes that even though the U.K. and the European Union are parting ways, they can still find a way to work together. But, he warns, “We cannot shape a new European future at such a time of fragility by indulging in nostalgia — none of us, including the U.K., can bring back the past.”

Anastasya Manuilova reports from Moscow on why Russian sanctions against Western food imports has not dented popular support for President Vladimir Putin, as demonstrated once again in elections this week. She cites a key study that says most Russians perceive Putin’s import ban as “a sign of strength” in standing up to Europe and the U.S..

Foreign Affairs Reporter Akbar Shahid Ahmed reports on a speech at the Harvard Club in New York by Turkey’s first lady, Emine Erdogan, about the recent coup attempt. She asked Americans to imagine how they would react if the Brooklyn Bridge was seized by terrorists.

Writing from Beijing, Wang Jisi, one of China’s leading experts on America, argues that the “new normal” of U.S.-China relations is an ongoing contest over framing the new rules of a world order in transition. Admiral Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, makes no bones about his objective of military domination of the western Pacific. “If we have to fight tonight,” he says, “I don’t want it to be a fair fight. If it’s a knife fight, I want to bring a gun. If it’s a gun fight, I want to bring in the artillery — and all of our partners with their artillery.” Writing from Manila, Richard Javed Heydarian charts the latest antics of the “fiercely independent-minded” president, Rodrigo Duterte. Heydarian notes that on a trip to Jakarta, the president was seen as “criticizing America and its lack of commitment to the Philippines, while praising Chinese assistance to the Philippines.” That has made some wonder, he says, “whether there would be irreversible consequences for bilateral relations [with the U.S.], among the oldest and most intimate in human history.”

In the wake of the New York and New Jersey bombings, Afghan-born suspect Ahmad Rahami’s father said he had told federal agents about his son’s interest in terrorist organizations a few years ago. Daniel Koehler explains why he believes the United States needs “deradicalization” counseling that provides concerned parents like Rahami and authorities with an option to derail a terrorist attack other than prematurely calling the police or keeping a young person’s unsettling turn a secret.

Ed Dolan explains why business leaders seem wary of a Donald Trump presidency. “The biggest corporations,” he surmises, “are trembling at the prospect that this populist outsider would break the cozy relationship they have had with government for as long as they can remember.”

Dominique Mosbergen reports on another focus at the U.N. this week. “The General Assembly is meeting to tackle a global health crisis that’s estimated to ‘kill more people than cancer‘ does now in the coming decades,” she writes. “Antibiotic resistance causes the deaths of at least 700,000 people annually. That number is expected to balloon to 10 million by 2050.” She also reports from Singapore on the staggering health toll the ever more regular haze is taking on populations across Southeast Asia.

Finally, our Singularity series this week looks at an experiment in which a man’s thoughts are able through induced chemical reactions to control nanobots inside a cockroach.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Gaining Ground: A Story Of Farmers' Markets, Local Food, And Saving The Family Farm

One fateful day in 1996, after discovering that five freight cars' worth of glittering corn have reaped a tiny profit of $18.16, young Forrest Pritchard vows to save his family's farm. What ensues--through hilarious encounters with all manner of livestock and colorful local characters--is a crash course in sustainable agriculture. Pritchard's biggest ally is his renegade father, who initially questions his son's career choice and rejects organic foods for sugary mainstream fare. But just when th

We Are As Gods

We Are As Gods

Between 1970 and 1974 ten million Americans abandoned the city, and the commercialism, and all the inauthentic bourgeois comforts of the Eisenhower-era America of their parents. Instead, they went back to the land. It was the only time in modern history that urbanization has gone into reverse. Kate Daloz follows the dreams and ideals of a small group of back-to-the-landers to tell the story of a nationwide movement and moment. And she shows how the faltering, hopeful, but impractical impulses of that first generation sowed the seeds for the organic farming movement and the transformation of American agriculture and food tastes. In the Myrtle Hill commune and neighboring Entropy Acres, high-minded ideas of communal living and shared decision-making crash headlong into the realities of brutal Northern weather and the colossal inconvenience of having no plumbing or electricity. Nature, it turns out, is not always a generous or provident host-frosts are hard, snowfalls smother roads, and small wood fires do not heat imperfectly insulated geodesic domes. Group living turns out to be harder than expected too. Being free to do what you want and set your own rules leads to some unexpected limitations: once the group starts growing a little marijuana they can no longer call on the protection of the law, especially against a rogue member of a nearby community. For some of the group, the lifestyle is truly a saving grace; they credit it with their survival. For others, it is a prison sentence. We Are As Gods (the first line of the Whole Earth Catalog, the movement’s bible) is a poignant rediscovery of a seminal moment in American culture, whose influence far outlasted the communities that took to the hills and woods in the late ’60s and ’70s and remains present in every farmer’s market, every store selling Stonyfield products, or Keen shoes, or Patagonia sportswear.

6 Expert-Approved Tips For Dating With Anxiety

When you suffer from an anxiety disorder, getting through a date can seem near impossible.

It may help to know you’re not alone. An estimated 18 percent of all American adults suffer from an anxiety disorder of some kind, ranging from social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and general anxiety. There’s a good chance you’ve gone on a date with someone who’s had a panic attack over the thought of dinner and a movie.

There are ways to cope with anxiety, though, and meet someone worthwhile. Below, experts on anxiety share their best advice for managing your worries and stress so you can successfully get through a date.

One technique that is well-known in anxiety treatment is the idea of exposure: The more you deal with things that stress you out, the better equipped you are to handle them. If dating feels particularly nerve-racking, start slow by putting yourself in situations where you can practice small talk, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University.

“Go to any social event ― a dance, a church picnic or a hangout after work ― and set a goal of talking to a stranger who seems interesting for at least 10 minutes, without the pressure to ask anyone out,” he told The Huffington Post. “Taking the scary thing ― a real date ― off the table will give you security to practice your dating and conversational skills until you get more comfortable.”

Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself in anticipation of the date, said Jennifer Rollin, a psychotherapist in North Potomac, Maryland. Just because you think you’ll spend the whole night stuttering out of nervousness and mispronouncing menu items doesn’t mean that’s necessarily going to happen.

“When you view your thoughts as ‘just stories,’ you can distance yourself from the ones that are unhelpful,” she said. “Let’s say that you are thinking ‘I’m going to come across as insecure’ or ‘If people knew about my anxiety, no one would want to date me.’ Rather then judging yourself for having these thoughts, simply notice them and then determine whether that train of thought is helpful or unhelpful.”

When a thought is unproductive, filter it out and try to replace it with something more optimistic, Rollin recommended.

“For example, you might tell yourself, ‘No matter how this date goes, I am proud of myself for facing my anxiety and putting myself out there.’”

Try to see a healthy dose of stress as your friend when you’re dating, said Kimber Shelton, a psychologist based in Duncanville, Texas. A bit of nervous energy can give you the focus and motivation to get through the date. The key is to keep the date short so you don’t feel trapped.

“When stress is first activated we think, ‘I feel nervous, but I can do this!’ ― but that thought can be be temporary and short-lived,” she explained.

To that end, Shelton recommends scheduling dates of a reasonable length and meeting up in a familiar place ― your favorite coffee shop, for instance, or a nearby restaurant where you’re well versed in the menu.

“You want to just slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone,” she said.

Everyone dreads awkward silence on dates but when you have anxiety, you may feel a heightened need to “be on” around new people. You often feel tongue-tied, making even even basic conversation difficult.

To combat this kind of performance anxiety, Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael recommends storing up a few conversation starters beforehand.

“Read some news stories before your date and choose a handful of topics that might come in handy ― something about the arts, the weather, sports, local news and world events,” she said. “Besides filling up the awkward silences, this will connect you to your date because current events are relevant to pretty much everyone.”

In anticipation of a date, it’s easy to get caught up in how the other person might perceive you. But instead of worrying about where you stand, psychologist Stacey Rosenfeld suggests flipping the script: How will they stack up in your estimation?

“Shift your focus to whether or not this is a suitable person for you to date, said Rosenfeld, who’s based in Coral Gables, Florida. “Focus on what you have in common, their chemistry with you and whether or not you’d like to see this person again.”

She added: “This can take a lot of the pressure off the meeting because you realize you have an active role in this process, rather than passively waiting to be accepted or not. This strategy works great for job interviews, too!”

When the date is over, put it to bed. You may feel tempted to mentally replay the awkward moments or lulls in conversations but resist that urge, said Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and author of Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious.

“Rather than beat yourself up or focus on awkward moments, go through the date recalling fun moments and good conversation,” she said. “Did you both find yourself laughing or did your date compliment you, or vice versa?

If the date truly lacked any moments of connection, remind yourself it wasn’t your fault, Kolakowski said: “Sometimes people just don’t click, and that’s OK.”

This Teen Is Almost 8 Feet Tall — And Still Growing

At 7 feet 8 inches, Broc Brown definitely sticks out in a crowd, and he’s only going to get bigger.

Brown’s family knew something was up at a young age: He was 5-foot-2 in kindergarten, according to his mother, Darci Elliot.

“When he got into middle school he was around 6 feet tall, and by high school he was 7 feet tall,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop.”

Brown, 19, grows an astounding six inches a year because of a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. The condition reportedly affects 1 in 14,000 newborns, but the National Institutes of Health says the number may be closer to 1 in 5,000, since not everyone who has it is properly diagnosed.

Kids with the syndrome tend to grow quickly in younger years and have unusually large heads, but their adult height is often in the normal range. That makes Brown a rarity among rarities.

Other symptoms include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper.

Brown has both, his mother said.

“When he gets mad, he’s mad. It wouldn’t take him two seconds to pop a hole in the wall ― it could be very dangerous if he wasn’t on medication and able to be calmed,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “But overall, he is a big softie, his heart is as big as his body.”

Brown is in constant pain because of other issues, including curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord. He was born with only one kidney, which means he can’t take painkillers.

“It kind of feels like a big tennis racket has gone through my back,” he told Barcroft.

Dr. John Pappas, director of NYU Clinical Genetic Services and associate professor of pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, said there is no cure for Sotos syndrome and treatments address only the symptoms, not the cause.

“We don’t have a specific kind of medication that can control the overgrowth of protein,” Pappas told HuffPost.

Pappas, who hasn’t treated Brown, said factors beyond Sotos syndrome may be causing Brown’s non-stop growth.

The teen’s trajectory has been financially challenging for his family.

“There’s a lot of things that are hard, like finding shoes for him, finding clothes,” Elliot told local station WILX-TV in 2013. Nike helped by donating a pair of size 24 shoes.

Brown’s size has helped him reach a certain height of fame.

Previously, he held the Guinness World Record for tallest male under the age of 18. He outgrew that honor when he reached legal age. Kevin Bradford of Doral, Florida, who stands 7-feet-1, now holds that honor.

But if Brown continues to grow, he could soon be looking down at 8-foot-3 Sultan Kösen, the current owner of the tallest living person honor. Kösen stopped growing in 2012 at the tender age of 29.

Brown doesn’t seem concerned about being the world’s tallest man. He’d be happy with a normal, comfortable existence.

“I hopefully want to work for a sporting goods store or something like that, a cashier or something,” he said. “I just want to have my own job.”

Donald Ducking The Press

As I write that headline, I have to wonder why we all haven’t been using the neologistic verb “Donald ducking” by this point in the presidential race. After all, a large part of Donald Trump’s campaign has been built on the foundation of him ducking questions and issues that he doesn’t want to talk about. He’s a master at the art, in fact. Consider just the birther issue — up until last Friday, Trump’s been successfully ducking the issue for the entire campaign. He never answered the basic question of Barack Obama’s birthplace, saying quite bluntly that he just didn’t want to talk about it. He got away with not talking about it for almost a year and a half. Donald ducked, and it worked.

But since his makeover into Trump 2.0 (now with TelePrompTer!), Donald hasn’t just been ducking the questions he doesn’t like, he’s been ducking answering any tough questions altogether. Earlier in the campaign season, Hillary Clinton was (quite rightly) derided by the press for not giving a press conference for nine solid months. She finally relented (as a part of her own campaign makeover), and now gives press conferences and answers questions from the press corps travelling with her on a regular basis. Trump, however, has moved in the opposite direction, and hasn’t given a press conference in almost two months now.

This is kind of extraordinary, because he used to hold press conferences all the time. He seemed to love the back-and-forth freewheeling nature of the events, even taunting the reporters at times. But now he hasn’t given one since the last week in July. I suppose it’s not all that surprising, since this period roughly matches up with the press suddenly waking up to its responsibility to vet both candidates equally (call it the post-Matt Lauer era). Much tougher questions have arisen around Trump, questions he quite likely doesn’t want to answer any more than the questions about his championing birtherism for so long.

The Trump Foundation is the prime example this week, as the Washington Post continues its very deep dive into Donald Trump’s charitable giving (or lack thereof). It seems the Trump Foundation gave over a quarter of a million dollars — of other people’s money, since Trump hasn’t given the foundation a dime for more than six years — to resolve lawsuits against Donald Trump himself. This could be a federal crime, amusingly named “self-dealing.” This revelation came after the news that the Trump Foundation had made an illegal campaign donation of $ 25,000 to a state attorney general who was considering taking Trump University to court — but who decided not to, after getting money from the Trump Foundation.

These are just the biggest revelations about the Trump Foundation, mind you — the Post has uncovered plenty of other questions Trump is not likely to want to answer either (Lester Holt, are you paying attention?). But even sticking to just the biggest stories, it’d be pretty easy for an enterprising reporter to frame the question to Trump in the following manner:

“Mr. Trump, the Washington Post has revealed that your namesake foundation has given over $ 250,000 to settle your personal legal problems. What interested me most — and, I suspect, what will interest the public as well — is that one of these payoffs happened because you essentially refused to make good on a golf bet. You offered a cool million bucks if anyone got a hole-in-one during a tournament held at one of your golf courses. A man hit a hole-in-one, but instead of ponying up, you stiffed him. You said that the hole somehow wasn’t long enough. He sued you to get you to make good on your promise, and you wound up paying only $ 158,000 — not to him, but to a charity he supported; and from your foundation’s funds, not from your own pocket. So my question is: why should the American people trust you as their president when you don’t even keep the promises you make on the golf course?”

This would nicely wrap the controversy up in a package that just about anyone could relate to. Wimping out on paying a bet (or a promise made on a golf course) is something few people see as an admirable quality, after all. It’s something that has happened to many average voters, in fact. Say what you want about Mitt Romney, but if Rick Perry had indeed taken him up on that infamous $ 10,000 bet, I would never have expected Romney to weasel out of paying off the bet if he lost. This is simply not true with Donald Trump.

The Trump campaign, quite obviously, doesn’t want Donald Trump to even have to face such questions. He’ll do interviews with friendly journalists guaranteed not only to just toss softball questions at him, but also guaranteed to not call him out on it when he ducks them. But he hasn’t faced the press en masse in almost two months. The campaign is probably smart to do so, since the less Trump talks to the press off the cuff, the fewer chances he has of lighting a bonfire of a controversy for them to report on (as used to regularly happen).

So from now on, it would behoove the media to ask all Trump surrogates who are willing to appear on camera the basic questions: “Why hasn’t Trump given a press conference in two months? What is he scared of?” Or, to put it in slightly more “animated” terms (as it were): “Why is Donald ducking?”
