The New Bread Basket

The New Bread Basket

For more than 10,000 years, grains have been the staples of Western civilization. The stored energy of grain allowed our ancestors to shift from nomadic hunting and gathering and build settled communities-even great cities. Though most bread now comes from factory bakeries, the symbolism of wheat and bread-amber waves of grain, the staff of life-still carries great meaning. Today, bread and beer are once again building community as a new band of farmers, bakers, millers, and maltsters work to reinvent local grain systems. The New Bread Basket tells their stories and reveals the village that stands behind every loaf and every pint. While eating locally grown crops like heirloom tomatoes has become almost a cliché, grains are late in arriving to local tables, because growing them requires a lot of land and equipment. Milling, malting, and marketing take both tools and cooperation. The New Bread Basket reveals the bones of that cooperation, profiling the seed breeders, agronomists, and grassroots food activists who are collaborating with farmers, millers, bakers, and other local producers. Take Andrea and Christian Stanley, a couple who taught themselves the craft of malting and opened the first malthouse in New England in one hundred years. Outside Ithaca, New York, bread from a farmer-miller-baker partnership has become an emblem in the battle against shale gas fracking. And in the Pacific Northwest, people are shifting grain markets from commodity exports to regional feed, food, and alcohol production. Such pioneering grain projects give consumers an alternative to industrial bread and beer, and return their production to a scale that respects people, local communities, and the health of the environment. Many Americans today avoid gluten and carbohydrates. Yet, our shared history with grains-from the village baker to Wonder Bread-suggests that modern changes in farming and processing could be the real reason that grains have become suspect in popular nutrition.

Trump Goes Back To Original Immigration Position With Second 180 Flip

DES MOINES, Iowa – Donald Trump’s experiment with “softening” his immigration policy came to a dramatic end Saturday in a fairgrounds livestock pavilion, with the Republican presidential nominee promising deportations within an hour of his inauguration.

“We are going to rid of the criminals, and it’s going to happen within one hour after I take office,” he said. “We will move justly, but we will move fast. Believe me.”

Trump has made the forcible deportation of the 11 million people in the country without documentation a cornerstone of his presidential campaign from its start last year. It made him a favorite among a segment of the Republican base, and helped him win the nomination over a dozen Republican senators and governors.

Then, last week, Trump explained in an appearance on Fox News that “thousands and thousands” of people he had met with on the issue had urged him not to deport undocumented immigrants who have been in the country for years and have no criminal record, but rather stable jobs and families. That new tack brought an immediate backlash from some of his hardcore supporters – including author Ann Coulter – for breaking his promise, as well as “I told you so” claims from mainstream GOP critics who had long predicted his eventual flip.

Trump backtracked on his new position later in the week – including in a CNN interview, where he claimed the modification was not a “softening” but actually “a hardening.” The Saturday remarks appear to complete the process, with Trump suggesting that undocumented immigrants commit a significant percentage of the country’s crimes and making zero mention of finding some way for those who have not committed any crimes to stay.

He also asserted – without any supporting evidence – that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would, if she were to win, end “all routine immigration enforcement.”

“In other words, totally open borders. Which will lead to a massive crime wave,” Trump said.

“I think he was trying to make up for his missteps,” said Brian Zegers, a 48-year-old personnel consultant who attended the biker-themed event in a leather vest and bandana. Smiling, Zegers attributed Trump’s original reversal to the advice of consultants and said the reversal of the reversal was just what the boisterous crowd of Trump supporters wanted to hear.

Other, more committed Trump fans said his shifts in position were of no concern to them. “The message will get tightened up before the election,” said Jim De Kruif, 57 an investment adviser who has always assumed that Trump will modify his policies heading into the general election. “That’s what politicians do.”

Trump also continued his recent practice of pledging to work for African-Americans and Latinos in front of virtually all-white audiences. He spent about five minutes of his 50-minute speech promising lower taxes for family farms and offering a commitment to the corn-based ethanol mandate in gasoline for his Iowa audience, and then spent twice as long telling members of the two ethnic minorities that the Democratic Party had not helped them and that they should support Trump. “What do you have to lose?” he asked, repeating a new favorite line.

Saturday’s event was organized by Iowa’s freshman Sen. Joni Ernst, the second of what she is hopes will become an annual ritual: a motorcycle rally raising money for a veterans’ charity, followed by a GOP pep rally.

Trump, though, did not participate in the motorcycle ride from the local Harley Davidson dealership to the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Instead, as is his preference, he flew in specifically for the event aboard his personal airliner, delivering the final speech of the afternoon to the crowd of about 2,000.

Ernst and other Iowa elected officials preceded Trump on stage. While urging voters to support Trump, the leaders spent little time praising their presidential nominee, and mainly pointed out the importance of keeping Supreme Court nominations out of Clinton’s hands.

Even that approach, though, could not entirely insulate the hometown Republicans from the danger of such a volatile candidate at the top of their ticket. At a news conference to explain the benefits of the ride for a veteran’s charity, Ernst was confronted with a question about one of the latest controversies for Trump’s campaign: reports of CEO Steve Bannon’s domestic violence charge from his first marriage.

Ernst pointed out that it was not her job to vet Trump’s staff. “I am not making the hiring decisions,” she said, but then quickly added: “Sexual assault and domestic violence is never OK – is never OK.”

13 Questions That Will Change Your Life

2016-08-18-1471552531-5357259-13QuestionsThatWillChangeYourLifeHP.jpg

When things aren’t going quite the way you’d like them to, it’s often the result of not asking yourself the right questions. Some questions are hard to confront because you’re afraid you won’t get the answer you want, others because you really don’t want to know the answer.

But the best things in life don’t come easily, and turning away from life’s toughest questions is a sure path to mediocrity. I believe that Socrates said it best:

“The unexamined life isn’t worth living.”

Socrates’ observation also applies to business. When Eric Schmidt was CEO of Google, he famously said, “We run this company on questions, not answers.”

Life, like business, runs on questions, not answers. Let’s take a closer look at some of the tough questions we should be asking ourselves regularly.

1. How do people see me differently than I see myself?

Have you ever heard a recording of your voice and thought, “Is that what I really sound like?” Because of the way the sound of the voice travels through the human skull, we never hear ourselves the same way that everybody else hears us. The same is often true for the way we behave. We interpret our behavior in terms of how we think we come across, whereas everyone else sees the real thing. A 360° assessment is a great way to gain this perspective. It gathers feedback that is constructive, anonymous, and accurate. If you forego the 360 and solicit feedback in person, make certain you ask for feedback that is specific, avoiding broad questions and generalizations. For example, you’re more likely to get an honest and accurate answer to, “How well did I handle myself in the meeting when everyone disagreed with me?” than to, “Am I a good boss?” And be careful to show that you’re receptive to the feedback. If you flip out or get defensive every time somebody speaks their mind, they’re going to stop doing it.

2. What/whom did I make better today?

That’s another way of saying, “Leave things better than you found them.” Ending each day by asking yourself what or whom you made better is a great way to keep yourself grounded and focused on what really matters.

3. Am I being true to my values?

Do you ever get that nagging feeling that something is a little off in your life? This often happens when little behaviors creep up on you that violate your values. If spending quality time with your family is one of your primary values, but you keep staying late at work, there’s a conflict. If you want that nagging little voice to go away, you’re going to have to do something about it.

4. If I achieved all of my goals, how would I feel? What can I do to feel that way as I work to achieve them?

The ability to delay gratification in pursuit of your goals is one of the most fundamental prerequisites for success, but delaying gratification doesn’t have to mean being miserable until you cross that finish line. You can achieve more–and have more fun doing it–if you let yourself feel some of that pride and pleasure along the way.

5. What haven’t I taken the time to learn about?

It’s a big world out there, and it’s getting bigger all the time. Scientists have theorized that it once took 1,500 years for the accumulated knowledge in the world to double; now it only takes a year or two. Don’t get caught behind.

6. In what areas of my life am I settling?

When you settle, you accept less than you’re capable of. Sometimes we settle in dead-end jobs. Other times we settle for unhealthy relationships. If you don’t ask yourself where and why you’re settling, it’s hard to stop it.

7. What do I want my life to be like in five years?

Lewis Carroll once said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” The corollary is that, once you have your destination in mind, you can plan your route. Five years is the perfect timeframe: It’s not so far in the future that you can’t imagine yourself there, but it’s not so close that you can’t do anything about it.

8. What would I do if I wasn’t scared?

From a survival perspective, fear has its purpose. It’s what keeps us from sticking our hand in the washing machine or any of the million other things that could get us hurt or killed. But fear has a tendency to get carried away. Instead of keeping you safe, it keeps you from improving your life and living your dreams.

9. Who has qualities that I aspire to develop?

When people have qualities that you admire, it’s a great exercise to reflect on these qualities and think about ways that you can incorporate them into your repertoire.

10. What problem are we solving?

Have you ever been in a meeting and suddenly realized that not everyone was having the same conversation? Not because people were talking over each other, but because they had different ideas about the purpose of the discussion. Sometimes it helps to put the topic on the whiteboard when you’re having a meeting. This makes certain everyone knows why they’re there.

11. What’s stopping me from doing the things that I should be doing?

It’s easy to shrug your shoulders and say, “I don’t know what to do,” but that’s just an excuse. Most of the time, we know exactly what we should be doing; we just aren’t willing to move the obstacles out of the way.

12. Will you be my mentor?

It’s an intimidating question to ask, but few people will turn you down. Everyone likes being looked up to, and it feels good to share our knowledge with others.

13. What’s the most important lesson I’ve learned so far in life? Am I living that lesson?

Sometimes life lulls us back into complacency and we’re forced to learn a powerful lesson twice. The trouble with this is that it’s just as much of a rude awakening the second time around.

Bringing It All Together

Asking the hard questions can be extremely uncomfortable. But we don’t learn and grow by sticking with what’s comfortable.

What other questions should people be asking? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Why Does My Hip Click?

Snapping Hip
Snapping hip is an audible clicking or snapping sensation caused by hip movement that can be painful. There are a variety of reasons patients present with a clicking or snapping sensation in the hip. A click in the hip can be the result of the following: a labral tear, iliotibial band syndrome, psoas bursitis, psoas tendon snap, and arthritis of the hip. It is essential for physicians to understand each cause to provide an effective course of treatment.

Labral Tear
A labral tear is a common cause for clicking sensations in the hip joint. The labrum refers to the ring of cartilage surrounding the socket of ball-and-socket joints. The labrum of the hip is essential in providing stability to the joint. This same ring of cartilage can be found in the shoulder.

Labral tears can be the result of degenerative or traumatic processes. Degenerative labral tears can occur from repetitive motions or osteoarthritis. Traumatic labral tears can occur from injury or dislocation of the joint. Femoroacetabular impingement is a common cause of a labral tear. Impingement occurs when the proximal femur abuts the acetabulum with movement of the hip. This occurs especially in hip flexion. A patient with a labral tear will usually present with complaints of a clicking or a locking sensation in the joint. In addition, a patient will present with pain in the hip or groin, stiffness and decreased range of motion.

2016-08-26-1472230479-3420199-hip6.PNG

Diagnoses
To diagnose a labral tear, physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations, imaging and diagnostic injections. MRI arthrograms are typically utilized to diagnose a labral tear, while injections are then used to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment for a labral tear can range from conservative modalities to surgical intervention. Conservative treatments include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy and injection. If conservative treatment fails, arthroscopic surgery may be needed to debride or repair the tear and the impingement can be addressed at the same time.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome.
Iliotibial band syndrome is another common cause of snapping hip. The thickened iliotibial band snaps over the bony greater trochanter of the femur. The patient may develop trochanteric bursitis, adhesions, gluteus maximus inflammation or edema.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of iliotibial band syndrome can be done by direct palpation of the greater trochanter. This can be accomplished by placing a patient on their side, while putting the hip into extension and rotation until a “pop” is heard or felt. The patient can reproduce the snapping and sometimes this moment is physically seen.

2016-08-26-1472230535-5500850-hip3.PNG

Ober’s Test
The Ober’s test is the best clinical examination for assessing the tightness of the iliotibial band. To perform the Ober’s test the patient will lay on their side with the unaffected leg on the bottom. The examiner will slowly abduct the leg with the knee in flexion and the hip in extension. When the iliotibial band is tight, the test is positive. In a positive test the patient will be unable to adduct the leg and the knees will not come together.

2016-08-26-1472230571-61357-hip4.PNG

Iliopsoas Tendon Snap
Iliopsoas tendon snap is the result of movement over the iliopectineal eminence. The iliopsoas tendon will snap over the pelvic brim. It is caused by inflammation of the bursa that lies between the front of the hip joint and the iliopsoas muscle or tendon. Diagnosis is usually difficult, the ultrasound or MRI may be normal or it may reveal fluid anterior to the hip joint (bursitis). An iliopsoas injection can be diagnostic. Abduction and external rotation and hearing the snap or the click of the hip will support this diagnosis.

2016-08-26-1472230606-4697293-hip2.PNG

Hip Arthritis
A click in the hip can also result from arthritis in the hip joint. Arthritis leads to the loss of cartilage between the head of the femur and the acetabulum. Without adequate cartilage, there is bone-on-bone interaction that causes pain, tenderness and inflammation of the hip joint. Patients will present with stiffness (limited movement), clicking in the hip joint, pain worsening with activity, and tenderness in the groin and hip. Physicians will utilize a combination of physical examinations and X-rays to identify loss of cartilage. Treatment for hip arthritis can be conservative or surgical. With severe arthritis a hip replacement will be needed to remove and replace the arthritic joint.

Weekend Roundup: Anti-Global Backlash Is Realigning Politics Across the West

The great sociologist Max Weber postulated that the birth act of modern capitalism was the secession of business from the household and thus the web of moral and ethical obligations that intimate form of human organization entailed. Zygmunt Bauman has called globalization the “‘second secession’” in which unleashed capitalism has “‘flown away’” from the constraints of the nation-state, in effect the larger household. Now, national households are clawing back their claims, reasserting sovereignty in an anti-globalization backlash that is profoundly realigning politics.

“Across the West,” Nouriel Roubini writes, “establishment parties of the right and the left are being disrupted — if not destroyed from the inside. Within such parties, the losers from globalization are finding champions of anti-globalization that are challenging the formal mainstream orthodoxy. Thus, the traditional distinction between center-right and center-left is breaking down.” In the U.S. and Britain, he notes, working class voters traditionally aligned with the left, are joining the ranks of Trump and Brexit. In continental Europe, discontent with immigration and austerity has given rise to new parties on both the far right and the far left. “A new political alignment,’ Roubini concludes, “erases the old left and right paradigms of labor versus capital, workers versus business, taxes and regulation versus free enterprise. Instead, the new alignment will be organized around pro and anti-global integration forces.” As Roubini points out, support for globalization these days comes mainly from the emerging economies, which have largely benefited from foreign investment and access to global markets. While inequality has grown within the West, he notes, it has diminished on a global scale.

To the extent global integration has touched Brazil, pride rises with greater prosperity. As the Olympics wound down, Adriana Caitano vents her anger in an open letter from Brazil “to people who love to come here to enjoy the beaches and stare at women in bikinis, but disrespect the country that hosts them.” She imagines what the “American swimmers [involved in the faux robbery scandal] must have thought: Of course it would be very possible for four foreign, white, tall, Olympians to be assaulted in Rio de Janeiro. Who would not believe it? This underdeveloped country can’t even clean a pool the right way. They would never be able to find the truth. So we’ll just go back to the American dream with our medals.”

One can’t speak these days of bikinis in Brazil without bringing to mind the controversy over banning the burkini in France, where local police this week forced a woman on a Nice beach to show more skin in her bathing wardrobe. Willa Frej reports on a man in France who has been paying the fines for women ticketed under the burkini ban. Nick Robins-Early examines what many regard as the weak reasoning behind the ban. And, indeed, by week’s end, France’s highest administrative court, the Council of State, suspended the ban in an initial ruling in a case brought by a human rights group. At the same time, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is running for office again, pledged he would implement a nationwide ban on the burkini if elected.

During a visit to the beach in Izmir Province, Turkey, Ilgin Yorulmaz surveys opinion in that Muslim-majority country with a modern secular history. “With historical ties to France,” she reports, “Turks are divided over their opinions of the burkini both in France and in their own country.” Despite Canada’s historic links to France, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made clear his country doesn’t share France’s secular fundamentalism. “We should be past tolerance,” he says, and move toward embracing diversity. In a post from HuffPost Maghreb, Akram Belkaïd calls for, “open debate about this implicit requirement of total assimilation” behind the burkini ban. Writing from Germany where a debate is underway about banning the burqa, Christian Democratic Union politician Ruprecht Polenz similarly argues that, “underlying the burqa debate is the fear that we can never eliminate the differences in our society.”

The repercussions of the Turkish coup continue to roil the geopolitical landscape. As U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visited Turkey this week in an effort to temper rising anti-Americanism fueled by a belated and tepid response by U.S. authorities to the failed coup, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan doubled down on the demand to hand over Fethullah Gülen, who lives in the U.S. and whom he sees as the culprit behind the attempted overthrow of the government. Reviewing these developments, David Hearst asks, “Is America losing Turkey?” Doug Bandow thinks that it would be a good idea if America did lose Turkey. “The growth of Putinism in Ankara today is a terrible embarrassment, with no corresponding security benefit for America as compensation,” he writes. “The U.S. should change its approach to reflect changing circumstances. Turkey’s membership in NATO no longer serves America’s and Europe’s interests.” Farah Mohamed examines the impact of the coup attempt on the long-festering conflict between Greeks and Turks in Cyprus. Resolution of that conflict is seen by many as a key stepping stone in Turkey’s bid to join the European Union, a relationship now even more fraught as Europe is deeply wary of Erdoğan’s even sharper post-coup turn toward authoritarianism. As one Cypriot told Mohamed, some islanders, “feel caught up in a fight that does not belong to them.”

In an essay titled “Why China Fears a ‘Color Revolution’ Incited by the West,” I argue that the U.S. should appreciate the resonances of China’s history as a unitary state present in today’s one-party system. By recognizing that system’s legitimacy, the U.S. would allay the suspicion of China’s leaders that it is seeking to foment regime change through the promotion and support of human rights activists. I further argue that, for the first time in the long history of China’s “institutional civilization,” an autonomous civil society is emerging because everyone now has the same information as those who rule them. “Whether China ends up on the wrong side of history or not depends on its ability to find a balance between rule from the top and an emergent civil society from below,” I conclude. “We in the West should encourage China’s effort to forge a new equilibrium out of its own experience, not seek to project our legacy onto their future.”

Writing from Beijing, Peiran Wei asks, “Why are Chinese companies, which have long been playing catch-up with their U.S. counterparts, now leading the way?”

Finally, our Singularity series this week looks at how Harvard scientists have “radically rewritten” the E. coli genome, heralding a major step forward in synthetic biology.

Thought-Provoking Questions

Often, when I am booked for lectures or radio and television interviews, I am provided questions in advance to help me prepare. Some of the questions are provocative, the kind that make me stop and think. So much so, I am sharing a few here with my replies.

1. What are three principles you live by?
a) “Identify the fear and then go there.” Usually I’m afraid because it is something I have never done before, and so I figure I will at least learn something new. I always ask myself: What is the worst-case scenario? If it’s one I can deal with, I go for it.
b) “Not everything worth doing is worth doing well.” Being stuck striving for perfection will not allow you to move on. For me, this pertains to writing. It is never finished and can always be improved upon. But at some point, it must be abandoned. Of course, this does not apply to everything; be sure to use discernment.
c) “Maintain an open mind.” I try to not be judgmental or assume that I know best. I listen and attempt to understand other points of view, seeing them in the contexts of culture and personality. When presented with a new opportunity, I ask myself: Will I learn something?

2. Do you believe nature or nurture has more impact?
People are born with specific tendencies; some children are shy, some are outgoing. This is a natural component of our genes, but then life experiences also impact our brains. Successes can reinforce behavior while failures discourage future attempts. So it is both. First it is nature, then nurture. Both have an equal influence.

3. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
I wish I had not cared so much about what other people thought of me. As women, we try to please others more than necessary. Speak the truth as often as possible and be willing to be disliked, but respected.

4. What did you wish to be when you were a child?
My childhood dream was to be a poet. I won a poetry contest for a poem I wrote when I was eight. This early success inspired me to continue writing poems, which I still do today.

5. What role does luck play in success?
Obviously, luck plays a part–you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people. However, success is also “opportunity meeting preparation.” I am always scanning my environment to look for ways to make a contribution and a difference.

6. What are the barriers to female leadership?
“MEN!” There is still gender discrimination, both conscious and unconscious, even by well-meaning men. Our culture continues to be dominated by male values, and, in the majority of cases, even when shown the same resume with a male or female name, men are chosen over women for both promotions and as new hires.

7. What was your biggest challenge?
a) Acceptance. As the only woman on the faculty of a business school, the first woman in a Rotary Club, the only female consultant in all-male organizations, I faced issues of acceptance. I did not try to blend in, as I knew this was not possible, so I stood out by wearing red suits, sitting on the arms of chairs to make me look taller (I am barely 5 feet tall).
b) A close second was being ignored–not only feeling invisible, but, also, not heard, and (when earned) not rewarded.

8. What changes in the workplace would you like to see?
I would like to see flexible working hours as a norm at work. This would permit time off not only for child-related needs, but, also, for the increasing needs of aging parents. Men must be provided with the same opportunity to take an equal share of these responsibilities without negative consequences in the workplace. What do you attribute your success to?
The willingness to ask the first question, using an assertive voice, looking others in the eye while conversing, giving credit when credit is due, looking and sounding confident (even when I do not feel that way), being well-prepared by knowing the agenda and relevant facts, and lastly, believing in myself.

9. What are the three rules you live by?
a) First of all, have fun. b) Do no harm. c) Be as helpful to as many people as possible.
I am urging you, my readers, to do the same. Think of each question as it relates to you, your values, philosophies, experiences, your life overall. Take time to answer these questions honestly and you might gain new insights–perhaps discover some unconscious motivations.

Trump’s Doctor Has An Amazing Explanation For That Bizarre Medical Report

Donald Trump’s personal physician told NBC News that he wrote a now-infamous medical report about the candidate in just five minutes.

Dr. Harold Bornstein, a gastroenterologist who has been Trump’s doctor for more than three decades, released a brief note last December declaring the reality TV star would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” The four-paragraph letter, which billed Trump’s health as “astonishingly excellent,” was far less detailed than medical reports traditionally released by presidential candidates.

In an interview with NBC airing Friday, Bornstein said he spent “five minutes” on the letter while a car sent by Trump waited for him outside his office in Manhattan.

“I get rushed and I get anxious when I get rushed, so I try to get four or five lines done as fast as possible,” Bornstein explained. “In a rush, I think some of those words didn’t come out exactly the way they were meant.”

The doctor stood by his assessment of the reality TV star’s wellness.

“His health is excellent, particularly his mental health,” he said.

He also defended the claim that Trump would be the healthiest president in history.

“I like that sentence to be quite honest with you, and all the rest of them are either sick or dead,” he said.

Watch the interview above.

Bornstein and his bizarre note have come under scrutiny again as Trump and his campaign surrogates have floated conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton’s health. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pressed Trump campaign manager Kellyane Conway on the issue during an interview Thursday.

“If he was elected, Donald Trump would be the oldest person to ever be sworn in as president,” Maddow said. “Whether or not he’s going to try to make Hillary Clinton’s health the issue, doesn’t he owe it to the American people to release an actual medical report, a more credible, more complete statement?”

Conway said “perhaps” he should release more information.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

The Big Oyster

The Big Oyster

Before New York City was the Big Apple, it could have been called the Big Oyster. Now award-winning author Mark Kurlansky tells the remarkable story of New York by following the trajectory of one of its most fascinating inhabitants-the oyster, whose influence on the great metropolis remains unparalleled. For centuries New York was famous for its oysters, which until the early 1900s played such a dominant a role in the city’s economy, gastronomy, and ecology that the abundant bivalves were Gotham’s most celebrated export, a staple food for the wealthy, the poor, and tourists alike, and the primary natural defense against pollution for the city’s congested waterways. Filled with cultural, historical, and culinary insight-along with historic recipes, maps, drawings, and photos-this dynamic narrative sweeps readers from the island hunting ground of the Lenape Indians to the death of the oyster beds and the rise of America’s environmentalist movement, from the oyster cellars of the rough-and-tumble Five Points slums to Manhattan’s Gilded Age dining chambers. Kurlansky brings characters vividly to life while recounting dramatic incidents that changed the course of New York history. Here are the stories behind Peter Stuyvesant’s peg leg and Robert Fulton’s “Folly”; the oyster merchant and pioneering African American leader Thomas Downing; the birth of the business lunch at Delmonico’s; early feminist Fanny Fern, one of the highest-paid newspaper writers in the city; even “Diamond” Jim Brady, who we discover was not the gourmand of popular legend. With The Big Oyster, Mark Kurlansky serves up history at its most engrossing, entertaining, and delicious. From the Hardcover edition.

U.S. Navy Fires Warning Shots At Iran Vessel After Close Encounter

WASHINGTON  - A U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots toward an Iranian fast-attack craft that approached two U.S. ships, a Pentagon spokesman said on Thursday, in the most serious of a number of incidents in the Gulf area this week.

“They did feel compelled ultimately to fire three warning shots and the reason for that is… they had taken steps already to try and de-escalate this situation,” spokesman Peter Cook told reporters.

Tensions have increased in the Gulf in recent days despite an improvement in relations between Iran and the United States.

Years of mutual animosity eased when Washington lifted sanctions on Tehran in January after a deal to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions but serious differences still remain over Iran’s ballistic missile program, Syria and Iraq.

A U.S. defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the USS Squall patrol craft fired three warning shots from a .50 caliber gun in the northern Gulf on Wednesday after warning flares did not work.

The incident started with three Iranian vessels, but there was only one around by the time the warning shots were fired, the official said. He described the Iranian behavior as “unsafe, unprofessional, and not routine.”

At one point, the Iranian vessel came within 200 yards (193 meters) of a U.S. ship, the official said.

Another interaction took place between an Iranian and U.S. ship on Wednesday, the defense official said but gave few more details.

The Pentagon earlier this week accused Iranian vessels of harassing a U.S. warship near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Iran’s defense minister said those Iranian vessels were just doing their job.

“If an American ship enters Iran’s maritime region, it will definitely get a warning. We will monitor them and, if they violate our waters, we will confront them,” Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said in a statement reported by the Iranian Students’ News Agency.

A State Department spokeswoman said it was not clear what the intentions of the Iranian ships were, but the behavior was unacceptable.

“We believe that these type of actions are of concern, they unnecessarily escalate tensions,” State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau told a briefing.

A Gift For You: Walk In The Woods Meditation

2016-08-25-1472151034-8505504-WalkintheWoods.JPG
After decades of practicing meditation, four years of teaching happiness meditation classes and workshops, and now leading weekend retreats, I finally wrote my own guided meditation, “A Walk in the Woods.” Being in nature makes us happy, but it isn’t always possible to physically be outside drinking up the sights, sounds, and smells of a wooded trail. We can, however, savor the forest sensations mindfully by taking the time to mentally create or recreate that experience in as much detail as possible.

I was inspired by the local Trails Committee and by the transformative Helen Keller essay, Three Days to See. With gratitude to them, I offer the following meditation to you. Please make it your own. I’ve based the meditation on a summer walk in the Vermont woods, but your walk may be in the fall, spring or winter, on a real or imaginary trail. Create or recreate the experience that best suits you. The following is more a series of suggestions than a road map.

A Walk in the Woods

I invite you to start by easing into your meditation practice. With your eyes closed, let your breath out with an audible sigh. Do this several times if you like. Take a moment to notice all the places your body is in contact with the floor, chair, or cushions. Appreciate the support of the furniture and the building you are in, as well as the strength of the earth, making it safe for you to relax into your meditation time. Next, in an easy gentle fashion, focus on your breath, for a few minutes, until you feel ready to proceed. Take as much time with this transition as you want.

When you are ready, imagine you are at the trail head, ready to step in among the trees. Before you begin your walk, take time for gratitude. You may be grateful to have an able body. You might thank those who built the trail, or the landowners who share their property with the public. Perhaps your gratitude is for the weather, or for a strong pair of sneakers and good socks. What are you grateful for? Again, take your time. There is no need to hurry.

Remember to breathe.

Now, stepping into the woods, where do your feet land? What does the trail look like? Are there trail blazes or other markers on the trees? Who made them? Are there roots or rocks you might stumble over? Fallen branches? Are ferns or maybe even poison ivy growing near the trail? Is it a sunny day? What kinds of patterns does the play of light through the tree canopy make? Look around, what can you really see?

When we practice mindfulness, we can try to use all our senses. Right now, for example, what do you hear in your own little forest? Maybe leaves crunching underfoot? Or birds — is there a variety of bird calls if you really listen? Is it a still day, or is a breeze blowing? What does that sound like? Other animals? Insects whirring by your ear or chirping from afar? Maybe even traffic or construction noises off in the distance? Mindfulness is about more than appreciating beauty — it is, deeply observing what truly is.

Still breathing?

What does the air smell like? Did it rain recently? Are there rotting logs nearby? Do you smell your own shampoo, or toothpaste? Maybe there are flowers, or berries — do you want to lean in and breathe in their aroma?

And touch — is the air on your arms and face cool from the shade, or is it a hot sultry day even in the woods?

Even taste — did you bring a water bottle along? What does the water taste like? Any leftover meal flavors still lingering in your mouth? Did you pick a berry to eat? Was it sweet, sour, overripe?

Breathing deeper now, and looking more carefully around you. You’re surrounded by trees, but what species? Have any blown over, from the wind or maybe lightning? What bark do you see around you? Patterns? Growths on trees? Any holes in the trees? Perhaps holes made by animals, or perfect for animals to crawl into. And of course the leaves, or pine needles — different shapes, various shades of green? Are there also browns, and reds — trees in distress, or maybe autumn is coming on. It’s time to see the trees themselves, not just the forest. Are there any very old trees? Or very young ones? Any competing for the sunlight? What else?

Where would we be without trees? Can you feel gratitude for them?

Still remembering to breathe, turn now to the rocks and stones. Do you see ledge, or quartz? What sizes — boulders? Pebbles? Do you have to climb over any rocks? Are they moss-covered? Sharp, rounded? Maybe you can even spot one that is heart shaped.

Now we’re walking next to a mountain brook. Is your brook full and flowing forcefully? Maybe it just rained? Or is it late summer, with only a trickle? Pause and put your hand in. How cold is it? What does the brook sound like? What patterns do you see, in the way the water falls, and on the rocks below the surface? Linger by the brook as long as you’d like.

When you’re ready, notice that the trail is going up hill. What are the sensations in your muscles? Are you winded? Sweaty? Thirsty? How is your body doing on this hike? Or is it more of an easy going walk for you? Even on this mental journey, can you listen to your body’s experience?

In this moment, we’ve stepped out of the woods into a meadow. It may be sunny, or overcast. Is it hotter? Or is there a wind blowing, making your skin cooler? Looking up, what do you see in the skies? Have the sounds in the meadow changed from those in the woods? And sights — perhaps here you might see butterflies. What else is different on this part of the walk?

Finally we’ve arrived at an overlook, where conveniently there’s a bench to sit on and savor the view. What do you see? A lake in the distance? Mountains? A city? Is the view awe-inspiring? Does the larger vista give you a sense of place in the world, maybe putting your own cares in perspective? Can you pay attention to your feelings as well as the view? Just accepting your feelings, not trying to change them or judge them in any way.

Spend as long as you want sitting on the bench, taking in whatever is present for you in this moment.

Finally, let’s end this meditation the way we began: with gratitude. Grateful perhaps for beauty, for public policies that have preserved park land, for your own self to take this time to flex your mindfulness muscles and nurture your connection with the natural world. Who and what are you grateful for?

When you are ready, open your eyes and gently return to your regularly scheduled programming.

How To Hack Your Brain To Destroy Procrastination, According To Harvard Research

2016-08-24-1472053518-6740167-1gd00lEhR7bZoKhkSIs0Cyg.jpeg

How to beat the “Tomorrow Syndrome” that almost everyone faces.

People procrastinate for many reasons, but the result is always the same: they rush to get the task done at the last minute or miss the deadline. Even though it feels frustrating to procrastinate, people still continue this bad habit. Why?

According to Caroline Webb in the Harvard Business Review, our brains are programmed to put off tasks. Webb shows research from UCLA proving that the allure of near-term gain almost always outweighs the attraction of future reward. Given the choice between concrete and more abstract ideas, our brain naturally sides with more material notions.

But just because our brains are seemingly working against us doesn’t mean we can’t overcome procrastination. Instead, it should inspire us to work at the task even more because it isn’t a personal flaw but a part of our natural make-up that can be re-trained.

Without further ado, here is the research backed-guide to get started:

Find an Accountability Partner

When we share our goals with someone else, it creates social pressure, but unlike the peer pressure we faced in high school, this type can lead to success.

Sharing your goals with a partner can create a system where you have a cheerleader and walking living reminder to stop procrastinating. In fact, according to Webb’s research, experts have found that we instinctively want to be respected by peers, and are more likely to reach our goals this way.

So when you have a task at work to complete, tell someone when you will finish it. If you tell a client or employee exactly when you’ll get something done, your brain will feel more obligated to actually do it. Even better, if you’re trying to accomplish a big-ticket item, harness the power of mentorship to boost your accountability and success.

Make the Cost of Action Feel Smaller

Identify the first step. Sometimes we’re just daunted by the task we’re avoiding. We might have “learn French” on our to-do list, but who can slot that into the average afternoon? Caronline Webb says the trick here is to break down big, amorphous tasks into baby-steps that don’t feel as painful. Even better: identify the very smallest first step, something that’s so easy that even your present-biased brain can see that the benefits outweigh the costs of effort.

So instead of “learn French” you might decide to “email Nicole to ask advice on learning French.” Achieve that small goal, and you’ll feel more motivated to take the next small step than if you’d continued to beat yourself up about your lack of language skills.

Tie the First Step to a Treat

We can make the cost of effort feel even smaller if we link that small step to something we’re actually looking forward to doing. In other words, tie the task that we’re avoiding to something that we’re not avoiding. For example, you might allow yourself to read lowbrow magazines or books when you’re at the gym, because the guilty pleasure helps dilute your brain’s perception of the short-term “cost” of exercising. Likewise, you might muster the self-discipline to complete a slippery task if you promise yourself you’ll do it in a nice café with a favorite drink in hand.

Remove the Hidden Blockage

Sometimes we find ourselves returning to a task repeatedly, still unwilling to take the first step. We hear a little voice in our head saying, “Yeah, good idea, but . . . no.” At this point, we need to ask that voice some questions, to figure out what’s really making it unappealing to take action. This doesn’t necessarily require psychotherapy. Patiently ask yourself a few “why” questions – ”why does it feel tough to do this?” and “why’s that?” – and the blockage can surface quite quickly. Often, the issue is that a perfectly noble competing commitment is undermining your motivation.

For example, suppose you were finding it hard to stick to an early morning goal-setting routine. A few “whys” might highlight that the challenge stems from your equally strong desire to eat breakfast with your family. Once you’ve made that conflict more explicit, it’s far more likely you’ll find a way to overcome it – perhaps by setting your daily goals the night before, or on your commute into work.

Trust Yourself to Start Now

Once you’ve figured out what’s keeping you from taking action on a specific task or project, it’s time to get over your fear. Webb’s research shows that we’re more likely to perform a cost benefit analysis on something new, but are far less likely to weigh the potential disadvantages of maintaining the status quo. This omission bias can keep us from doing things better just because it means doing something differently.

Get over this fear by using the 70% rule from the Marine Corps. As long as you have 70% of the information to make a decision, 70% of the resources to complete the project, and you’re 70% sure you’ll succeed, then you’re ready to go. The heart behind the 70% rule is that it’s impossible to be fully prepared for anything. Trust your gut and get started.

Focus on the Results of Procrastination

Mark Twain once said, “Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow.” Don’t listen to him!

Instead, focus on what will happen if you put off a task or project until the last minute. You might have an emergency come up causing you to miss the deadline. The result is you miss out on a good deal or you hurt your business image. Your client may feel you provided poor customer service, which could also affect your reputation and ability to obtain future work.

As you think more about the negative effects of putting off a task, you’ll be more motivated to avoid those effects and get the job done. According to Webb, Psychologists call this a prevention focus, because most people seek to avoid negative consequences even more than receiving positive results. This mindset will keep you pushing on even when you want to quit or put the job off to another day.

Accept that procrastination is a natural part of who you are, but just like anything else, you also that you have the power to retrain your brain and overcome it with these practical steps. L.M. Heroux said, “Stop talking. Start walking.” I’d like to alter that advice just a bit and say to you, “Stop reading. Start succeeding!”

Giant Ken Burns Fan Ron Johnson Once Tried To Defund PBS

WASHINGTON ― Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who last week said students would learn more from a Ken Burns documentary than from a teacher, once tried to defund PBS, the TV network that has aired the filmmaker’s work for decades.

Johnson joined an unsuccessful push to eliminate federal funding for public broadcasting in 2012, two years into his first term. He signed a letter authored by then-Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), calling on appropriations leaders to push legislation that would defund public broadcasting, including PBS.

We face many hard choices ahead, but defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting should be one of the easier decisions to make,” the letter stated. “We simply cannot afford to continue funding all of the programs that we have in the past.”

Burns, the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker whose work includes “The Civil War” and “Jazz,” has produced many documentaries since 1981 that aired exclusively on PBS ― Public Broadcasting Service.

Watching Burns’ work, Johnson argued last week, is the way to break up the “higher education cartel.” Johnson’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on whether the senator still supports defunding PBS.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is the nonprofit overseer of the federal government’s investment in public broadcasting, which includes PBS and NPR ― National Public Radio.

DeMint and Lamborn also introduced legislation in 2012 to defund PBS and NPR via the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The bill went nowhere, but proponents did pass a measure requiring the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to research alternative funding sources for public broadcasting stations.

Here’s what that research concluded:

“Without the federal appropriation, the public broadcasting system as we know it will not survive. For $ 1.35 per American this service leverages additional operating revenue from a variety of sources in communities across the country. Compare this entrepreneurial public-private partnership to the almost total funding provided by other countries for their public broadcasting service—in Canada it is $ 22.48 per citizen, for Japan $ 58.86, for the United Kingdom $ 80.36, and for Denmark it is $ 101 per citizen.”

The debate reached a fever pitch in 2012, after then-Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he, too, supported defunding PBS, but had nothing against Big Bird.

If PBS lost its federal support, as Johnson wanted, Burns would need to find a new outlet for his work. That may not be difficult. But it may mean that fewer students would have access to his documentaries. Those whose families can’t afford cable TV might be out of luck.

Johnson is up for re-election. Polls show his challenger, former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), who lost the seat to Johnson in 2010, ahead by roughly 10 points. (Only two polls have come out since July.)

Two Keys Why You Don’t Receive & How to Shift It!

Have you ever wondered why you struggle receiving the things you want? I see this a lot in my coaching practice and with my students. In fact, I would say that receiving is one of the key issues most people face. I would like to share with you some thoughts that might help you break out of this painful cycle.

Here are the two core reasons I’ve seen over and over again that shut people down to receiving:

1. We are brought up to believe that receiving is wrong. For some, this belief stems in religion, and for others it begins in the home.

There is a tendency in religion to push the belief that being of service means you must deny yourself. In other words, don’t receive. But when you live by this belief, you shut down to taking the time to go within and connect to God. This is where you get the guidance you need to live life in the flow with grace and ease.

Even if your family wasn’t religious, you might have been brought up in a home in which your mom and dad gave themselves up to take care of your needs. They set the example that it wasn’t okay to receive. This is why it’s so important for parents to love themselves. They don’t realize that they are perpetuating a cycle of pain for their kids to grow up and do the same.

2. Feeling bad about one’s self is the second reason most people don’t receive. If you have beliefs, whether conscious or hidden, that tell you something is wrong with you or that you have to act a certain way to receive, you’ll stay shut down to having miracles show up. This is why it’s so important to do the inner work of cleaning up subconscious beliefs. As you chip away at each of them and raise your Worthiness Quotient to inner abundance, you attract outer abundance and miracles.

I share a story of Cassie in my book, The Enlightened Mom, and her awakening to the importance of receiving. Cassie had attended my weekly live Enlightened Mom class, focusing on helping the ladies release subconscious beliefs so they could finally love themselves unconditionally and open up to receive. From the very first session, most of the moms were having breakthroughs and seeing miracles show up in their daily lives. But Cassie was different. She was mired in the negativity of her mind and really struggled with receiving.

For the last session of our class, we went to a local bookstore and sat on the patio. I invited the ladies to take a moment and go within to get grounded and connected to God before going into the store. Their mission was to allow God to guide them and to open up to receive a message.

Cassie was the first one back to the patio! With tear-filled eyes and joy that was palpable, she shared the incredible messages she received, one after the other from the pages of a book she had been guided to pick up. Cassie exclaimed, “I get it now! I used to ask God for guidance and would get so angry because I never got answers. Now I realize the messages were always there. All I had to do was give myself permission to open up and receive them!”

Cassie had been mired in false beliefs about receiving. She gradually chipped away at some of those beliefs during our class. But it wasn’t until that day at the bookstore that she finally realized a huge truth:

You are the one who determines whether you receive.

2016-08-24-1472065296-5598401-15278638_s.jpg

Are you like Cassie was? Are you shut down to receiving the love, guidance and support you seek to make life a joyful flow?

If your answer is yes, it is time to look within. Do you have religious programming that says to be of service you must not receive? Or did you grow up in a family in which your parents put themselves on the backburner, giving you an example that this is love?

To be able to give freely, you must learn to receive. You can’t truly be of service if you’re coming from an empty cup.

Here are three simple steps to open up to receive:

1. Give yourself permission to receive. You are the boss of your life. If you’re not receiving a life of grace and ease, it’s because you’re still making others the authority of your life.

2. Take time daily to connect. Spend time in meditation, prayer, journaling or whatever works for you, but by all means, connect. This is a powerful way to set your inner compass to receiving.

3. Be you! Pay attention to when you shut down your voice, your feelings and your needs. Then give yourself permission to share these things. If you struggle with this, go within and clean up the beliefs that stop you down. By loving yourself unconditionally, you send out an energetic message to the universe that says, “I deserve to receive simply for being me!”

Receiving is the loving thing to do. As you transition into this new belief, you will feel loved, guided and supported. You will shift from lack to abundance. And your life will flow magically with grace and ease.

Receiving is an act of service.

As you give yourself permission to receive, your cup will be so full that you’ll want everyone else to feel the way you do. You’ll serve others by lifting them up. You’ll want to give like never before. Your life will be your greatest act of service.

Big Soda Spends Millions On ‘Unethical’ San Francisco Area Ads Fighting Drink Taxes

SAN FRANCISCO — The beverage industry is spending millions to fight Bay Area proposals that would tax sugary drinks. Meanwhile, vastly outspent supporters of soda taxes are wielding new data they say shows taxes reduce consumption of drinks linked to childhood obesity and diabetes.

As the region once again becomes a battleground over soda and sugary drinks, residents in San Francisco, Oakland and the small city of Albany will vote separately in November on proposals that would add a 1-cent per ounce tax on sweetened beverages.

The well-funded beverage industry has reserved roughly $ 9.5 million in television ad time before Election Day, and has already spent $ 1 million on commercials in the Bay Area, Joe Arellano, a spokesman for groups opposing taxes, told HuffPost.

That could be trouble for soda tax supporters, who complain that the industry has bombarded voters with dishonest messages. Recent campaign spending reports showed the industry had spent $ 747,267 in Oakland, for example, compared with $ 23,297 by tax proponents.

Oakland voters have received multiple mailings that label the soda tax proposition a “grocery tax”  that will raise prices across the board at supermarkets. Instead of hitting shoppers with a steep increase only on sugary drinks, commercials featuring local shopkeepers say they’ll spread the cost around to staples like milk, bread and produce.

“It’s an incredibly painful and unethical lie,” said Oakland Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan. “People worry about having to pay for their groceries. To threaten that their groceries are going to be taxed when it’s not true is a totally despicable tactic from the soda industry.”

There’s nothing untrue about it, according to Arellano. “Those businesses have shown repeatedly that they will pass on those costs to their consumers,” he said.

Elected officials in Oakland, led by Vice Mayor Annie Campbell-Washington, vowed in July to fight Big Soda’s commercials and mailings by filing complaints with the Federal Communications Commission and the city’s Public Ethics Commission. Her office ignored repeated inquiries from HuffPost about whether the threat was carried out.

FCC and Public Ethics Commission spokesmen told HuffPost they had no open investigations into the “grocery tax” campaigns, but were barred from saying whether they had received any complaints about them.

Berkeley became the first city in the U.S. to impose a soda tax in 2014. An attempt that year in San Francisco failed to gain the two-thirds majority needed to become law. This year’s measure requires a simple majority of San Franciscans because of a modification in how tax revenue would be spent. Philadelphia became the biggest city to enact a soda tax in June.

An encouraging sign to Bay Area soda tax supporters is that Berkeley’s tax is having a greater impact than initially expected.

Consumption of soda, energy drinks and other taxed items fell by 21 percent in some neighborhoods after the tax took effect, according to research published Tuesday in the American Journal of Public Health. That’s double the 10 percent drop researchers had expected, according to Pat Crawford, a University of California-Berkeley professor.

Shoppers reported drinking 63 percent more water, according to surveys from a team led by University of California-Berkeley researchers. At the same time, consumers in Oakland and San Francisco increased their consumption of soda and other sweet beverages by 4 percent, researchers found.

The tax “is the single most important way” to deter people from drinking too much soda or iced tea, said Crawford.

Arellano, the soda industry spokesman, said the study was flawed. Survey participants in Berkeley had higher incomes and education levels than counterparts in Oakland and San Francisco, factors that may account for different behavior, he said.

Barry Popkin, a University of North Carolina professor who supports soda taxes as a tool to improve public health, said the income and education levels of Berkeley residents may produce larger results than in cities with different demographics.

Benefits like less tooth decay and weight gain would appear several years after launching a tax, Popkin said. Changes would be more dramatic if the taxes were higher, he said.

Other attempts to steer people away from soda are underway in the Bay Area.

A law that would require warning labels in advertising for sugary drinks, similar to warnings on cigarette ads, was supposed to take effect in San Francisco on July 25, but is tied up in court. It’s the first such law in the country.

“We know we’re at the front lines here and we know what the stakes are,” said Larry Tramutola, a consultant organizing support for the taxes in San Francisco and Oakland. “The soda industry is doing everything they can to try and defeat these.”
